Fine-grained aquifers, such as sandstones, are more apt to filter out pollutants from the surface than are rocks with cracks and crevices, such as limestone or other rocks fractured by seismic activity.

Eolianite is a term used for a rock which is composed of sand grains that show signs of significant transportation by wind. These have usually been deposited in desert environments. They are commonly extremely well sorted and rich in quartz.
Oolite is more a limestone than a sandstone, but is made of sand-sized carbonate ooids, and is common in saline beaches with gentle wave action.
Sandstone composition is (generally) based on the make up of the framework, or sand-sized grains in the sandstone. This is typically done by point-counting a thin section of the sandstone using a method like the Gazzi-Dickinson Method. The composition of a sandstone can have important information regarding the genesis of the sediment when used with QFL diagrams.

Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's continental crust, after feldspar. It is made up of a continuous framework of SiO4 silicon–oxygen tetrahedra, with each oxygen being shared between two tetrahedra, giving an overall formula SiO2.

There are many different varieties of quartz, several of which are semi-precious gemstones. Especially in Europe and the Middle East, varieties of quartz have been since antiquity the most commonly used minerals in the making of jewelry and hardstone carvings.

The gold was brought to the surface as small particles embedded in lumps of quartz. The quartz was then crushed into a fine dust by stamping batteries in a stamping mill. A stamping battery contained a row of stampers. On the bottom of each stamper was a heavy piece of steel. Each stamper was connected to the cam shaft which was turned by a water wheel. The steel shoes went up and down between wooden guides and pounded the quartz which had been fed into steel boxes underneath the stampers. Ideally the stamping batteries would work 24 hours a day.
After crushing, the quartz dust was mixed with water to make sloppy mud which then ran down sloping tables, called concentrating tables. On top of these tables were copper sheets coated with mercury, which attracts gold. The gold particles stuck to the mercury, and could be collected from there.

New Zealand mine blast leaves 27 missing

Rescue workers are trying to contact 27 miners missing after an explosion at Pike River Coal Co’s coking mine on the west coast of New Zealand. mobile crusher
There hasn’t been any communication with the miners and it isn’t known if they are trapped or sheltering, Pike River Coal’s chief executive officer Peter Whittall said. Two miners emerged after the blast and indicated that three colleagues were on their way to the surface, police said in a statement.
Ventilation inside the mine may have been compromised by the explosion which took place about 4pm local time, police said. Minister of Energy and Resources Gerry Brownlee said he is travelling to the region and that a local mine rescue team had been activated.
There were no indications of “heightened risk” at the mine before today’s accident, according to Andrew Little, the national secretary of the Engineering, Printing & Manufacturing Union, which represents 71 of about 140 workers at the mine. vibrating screen 
“It’s a reasonably new mine and it’s only been in production for a year or so,” Little said. “They delayed production because they weren’t satisfied that the ventilation system was right so they’ve been pretty careful about that.”
Pike River, near Greymouth, is part-owned by India’s Gujarat NRE Coke Ltd and Saurashtra Fuels Pvt who also take part of its low-ash, low-phosphorus coking coal. The mine is forecast to produce 320,000-360,000t in the year ending June 30, the company said on October 19.
New Zealand’s last mining disaster occurred in 1967, when 19 people died in an explosion at the Strongman coal mine, also near Greymouth.
The company’s shares fell 14% to 61 Australian cents in Sydney before they were halted from trading. The stock fell 4.4% to 88 New Zealand cents at the Wellington close.
One person may have been killed in the blast, the New Zealand Herald said, citing a report on Newstalk ZB. Five miners have walked free from the mine, Sky Television News reported, without saying where it obtained the information.
Mining employs about 6,000 people in New Zealand, according to government website www.beehive.govt.nz. The industry earned about NZ$1.1 billion (US$853 million) in export receipts in 2009.

Each year aggregate companies in Iowa produce about 35 million tons of raw material from over 500 locations to supply a myriad of construction projects across the state. The bulk of this supply is extracted from the familiar pits and quarries where gravel deposits and limestone bedrock are close to the land surface. But at eight locations across the state (Jasper, Louisa, Marion, Poweshiek, Scott, Story, Van Buren, and Webster counties), where geologic and market conditions permit, limestone for aggregate is extracted from underground mines.
Though more costly than quarrying, the underground mining of limestone can be both economical and necessary in some areas of the state. Shallow rock units, which were once acceptable, may no longer meet newer engineering standards for construction aggregate. In other instances, it is not economical to strip both the overlying glacial deposits and the poorer quality, shallow bedrock in order to quarry. An operator must decide whether to cease production and move to an alternate location, if one exists, or to shift operations underground. Numerous factors are weighed to determine the feasibility of such a production change. Is the needed quality rock present in sufficient thickness and at suitable depth? Are the market conditions satisfactory to warrant the added expense of underground start-up and production? In the last decade several Iowa stone producers have opted to shift production underground.

Eight Canadian Securities Regulators Sign Regulatory Cooperation Arrangement With China's Insurance

Eight members of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) have recently signed a Regulatory Cooperation Arrangement with the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) to establish a channel for regulatory cooperation in connection with Chinese insurance firms' overseas investments involving registered Canadian firms and recognized markets.

The securities regulators of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Québec and Saskatchewan entered into the arrangement to strengthen the level of regulatory cooperation with Chinese regulators in order to increase mutual understanding and information exchange.

"The CSA attaches considerable importance to Canada's eligibility as a destination for investments by Chinese insurers," said Jean St-Gelais, Chair of the CSA and President & Chief Executive Officer of the Autorité des marchés financiers (Québec). "The fact that this is only the third arrangement of this nature signed by the CIRC with foreign regulators is a clear statement by the CIRC about the strength of Canada's capital markets and the quality of its regulatory framework."

The regulatory cooperation arrangement paves the way for Chinese insurers to invest in financial products on Canadian markets regulated by CSA participating jurisdictions. It is expected to facilitate capital flowing from China into the Canadian market and create new business opportunities for market participants here in Canada.

The arrangement is currently in effect in seven of eight participating CSA jurisdictions. Subject to obtaining the requisite ministerial approval, the arrangement is scheduled to take effect in Ontario on December 29, 2010.

In April, a similar arrangement was entered into with the Chinese Banking Regulatory Commission in order to develop the wealth management business of Chinese commercial banks in Canada.

The CSA acknowledges the assistance of the Canadian embassy in Beijing with concluding the latest arrangement.

Established in 1998, the CIRC is authorized by the Chinese State Council to conduct administration, supervision and regulation of the Chinese insurance market, and to ensure that the insurance industry operates in compliance with the law.

The CSA, the council of the securities regulators of Canada's provinces and territories, co-ordinates and harmonizes regulation for the Canadian capital markets.

Survival, evasion…vacation?

My grandfather was a Naval Aviator during World War II. As a child I listened to his stories with amazement; I look back today with an even greater appreciation of his bravery. The news today is full of survival stories, most recently the saga of the Chilean miners, rescued after being trapped underground for more than three months. Movies like "Into the Wild" and the recently released "127 Hours" tell harrowing tales of people trapped alone in the wilderness.

It all makes me wonder: Do I have what it takes to survive the unthinkable? I decided to find out.

There are hundreds of survival schools in the United States and around the world. Regular people can spend a weekend, a vacation, or even up to a year learning how to survive in the Arctic or the South American jungle; or you can focus on practical skills a little closer to home.

Many schools now offer students a chance to experience a simulated emergency, like what to do if you survive a plane crash, or run into trouble in a foreign country. In breakthrough, scientists trap antimatter atoms

GENEVA – Scientists may have been able to capture elusive atoms of antimatter, but don't expect that to lead to interstellar rocket engines or powerful bombs anytime soon — if ever.

Even as they announced the important advance in studying antimatter, they emphasized that science fiction uses of the stuff — like propelling the starship Enterprise in "Star Trek" or fueling a bomb in Dan Brown's book "Angels and Demons" — remain in the realm of the imagination.

International physicists at the European Organization for NuclearResearch, or CERN, said they had overcome a basic problem in studying atoms of antimatter. While such atoms have been created routinely in the lab for years, they tend to disappear so fast that scientists don't have a chance to study them.

But in a report published online by the journal Nature, the scientists said they'd been able to trap individual atoms and keep them around for a bit more than one-tenth of a second.

To a particle physicist, that's a pretty long time.

"For us it's a big breakthrough because it means we can take the next step, which is to try to compare matter and antimatter," the team's spokesman, American scientist Jeffrey Hangst, told The Associated Press on Thursday

Hangst and his colleagues, who included scientists from Britain, Brazil, Canada, Israel and the United States, trapped 38 anti-hydrogen atoms individually. Hangst says that since the experiments they reported in Nature, they've been able to hold on to the atoms even longer.

"Unfortunately I can't tell you how long, because we haven't published the number yet," Hangst told the AP. "But I can tell you that it's much, much longer than a tenth of a second. Within human comprehension on a real clock."

Studying such trapped atoms could help answer basic questions in physics, like why antimatter has disappeared from the natural universe while ordinary matter abounds in the stars, planets and galaxies. Theorists say both must have been created in equal amounts in the Big Bang.

Two teams had been competing to trap anti-hydrogen atoms at CERN, the world's largest physics lab best known for its $10 billion smasher, the Large Hadron Collider. The collider, built deep under the Swiss-French border, wasn't used for this experiment.

Hangst's team beat a rival group led by Harvard physicist Gerald Gabrielse, who nevertheless welcomed the result.

"The atoms that were trapped were not yet trapped very long and in a very usable number, but one has to crawl before you sprint," he told the AP.

To trap the anti-atoms inside an electromagnetic field and to stop them from annihilating ordinary atoms, researchers had to create anti-hydrogen at temperatures less than a half-degree above absolute zero. vibrating screen

Hangst played down speculation that antimatter might someday be harnessed as a source of energy or to create a powerful weapon like in "Angels and Demons."

"It would take longer than the age of the universe to make one gram of antimatter," he said, calling the process "a losing proposition because it takes much more energy to make antimatter than you get out of it."

Macarthur rejects renewed bid

Macarthur Coal has rejected Peabody Energy's $3.5 billion approach saying the bid is not high enough.

The Australian coal miner knocked back the bid as it was still "too low", after Peabody increased the offer from its earlier $3.3 billion bid.

The offer jumped on Tuesday from $13 per share up to$14.

"All I'd say about our major shareholders -- and most of our shareholders -- is they believe the price being offered is a long way short of the mark," Macarthur chairman Keith DeLacy reportedly told The Australian.

Instead, Macarthur has stated that it will go ahead with its takeover of Gloucester Coal, and that Peabody's offer did not take into account the value of merged entity.

"Peabody's offer is conditional on Macarthur not proceeding with a proposed takeover of smaller rival Gloucester Coal and an associated transaction with Gloucester's largest shareholder, Singapore-based Noble Group," the company stated.

Macarthur has called a meeting for 12 April to discuss the acquisition of Gloucester, with Peabody stating that its takeover bid will lapse if shareholders approve the Gloucester takeover.

"Peabody is serious about its proposal to the Macarthur board and is seeking re-engagement as soon as practicable so we can further progress the proposal," a spokeswoman told The Australian.

After the acquisition of Gloucester, Noble plans to increase its stake in Macarthur.

The Australian coal miner has stated that the predicted price rise in PCI coal, with some analysts forecasting a doubling in the price, as one of the reasons behind the rejection of the bid.

Coal terminal queues reach record highs

Ships queuing for Australian coal ports have reached an all time high of 223, costing millions in exports.

Bottlenecks at Australian coal port terminals, in particular cyclone affected Dalrymple Bay and Hay Point in Queensland, have created queues of up to two months.

The congestion, which has seen 103 ships waiting for access to Darymple and Hay point alone, is expected to cost Australia eight million tonnes of coal exports and millions of dollars.

The bottlenecks across the east coast come despite upgrades to a number of terminals as well as the first shipments from a third coal point terminal at Newcastle.

Coal infrastructure has already shown signs of strain since late last year after an unexpected increase in Chinese demand tested the struggling infrastructure.

According to reports from The Australian, port congestion in the country is already at levels three times higher than China.

Platts launches daily metallurgical coal shipping and price reports

Platts today launched the world's first daily metallurgical coal assessments, which the company said would provide assistance in determining contract prices.

According to the company, the daily assessments will a demand from both miners and the steel mills for independent daily spot evaluations in the burgeoning Asian market.

Platts will provide two assessments, one dealing with hard coking coal loading in Australia for any destination and the other with coal delivered into China from any source.

These will complement the company's existing monthly coking coal assessments and its IODEX iron ore assessments.

"These new assessments, along with a dry bulk freight price from Australia to China, allow us to deepen our analysis of blast furnace economics, particularly those in China," said Platts' global director of steel Francis Browne.

"It is our hope the price transparency provided by Platts for this vital steel making ingredient, will meet the global industry’s need for comparative valuations of coking and other metallurgical coals."

The Hard Coking Coal Free On Board (FOB) Australia and Hard Coking Coal Cost and Freight (CFR) China assessments will capture the value of the material in US dollars per dry metric ton.

The company will also launch a daily dry bulk freight assessment, representing the cost of freight for cargoes carried on Panamax class vessels from Australia to China, as a standard for the price assessment process.

All three assessments will be published in Steel Markets Daily, Coal Trader International, International Coal Report and Platts' Metals Alert.

Indian mining firm to invest $500 million in NSW coal mines

Indian-owned mining firm Gujarat NRE Coking Coal has announced plans to invest $500 million in the expansion of its coal mines in New South Wales.

The company will invest up to $100 million this year, with the rest to be invested over the next four years.

Gujarat NRE owns and operates two underground coal mines in the Illawarra region. The company reinvigorated the local industry when it originally bought two mines that had ceased operations, and invested over $270 million to revive the mines, creating 450 new jobs over the years.

Chairman of Gujarat NRE Arun Kumar Jagatramka said, “The proposed expansion is expected to quadruple production capacity in the two mines and create an additional 150 jobs, including some apprenticeships, in the next five years.

“India is our primary export destination, and the demand for coking coal in India is expected to double over the next 10 years. This bodes well for the long-term future of our operations in Illawarra,” Mr Jagatramka said.

Gujarat NRE’s expansion plans include mine development, construction of access roads and purchase of services and equipment.

The mines, NRE No 1 Colliery and NRE Wongawilli Colliery, together produce about 1.3 million tonnes of coking coal a year. The expansion is expected to increase output to about 6 million tonnes a year by 2014-15.

Gujarat NRE Coking Coal is the subsidiary of India’s largest metallurgical coke producer, Gujarat NRE Coke Limited.

Mr Jagatramka said the company sources all technology, equipment and services for their local operations in Australia.

“We source conveyor products and diesel equipment for the mines from Valley Longwall International and One Steel provides the roof mesh for the mines. Some technology and services for our Indian operations are also sourced from Australia,” he said.

The company is active in the local community, recently providing a $1 million bank guarantee for the local basketball team, the Wollongong Hawks, to participate in the National Basketball League.

Gujarat NRE received support from Austrade, the Australian Government’s trade and investment development agency, and the New South Wales State Government to establish in Australia.

Austrade’s Senior Trade Commissioner for South Asia, Peter Linford welcomed Gujarat’s ongoing commitment and said that it was indicative of the growing interest from Indian investors in Australia.

“Already, Indian companies on the 2009 Fortune 500 list such as Reliance Industries and State Bank of India have invested in Australia. Suzlon Energy, Aditya Birla Group, Mahindra & Mahindra, and leading global ICT players like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Wipro also have a major presence here.

“India’s global foreign direct investment (FDI) increased almost six-fold from USD 2.9 billion in 2005 to USD17.4 billion in 2008, positioning India as a major player in global FDI outflow.

“More Indian firms are looking to expand operations globally, presenting significant opportunities in areas of traditional strength for Australia. Australian firms wanting to attract investment, and businesses which facilitate investment projects in Australia like banks and financial institutions, legal firms, consultancies, and other support services are the potential winners,” Mr Linford said.

Mr Jagatramka and Mr Linford will also speak at Austrade's Winning Business in India and South Asia seminars (19 - 30 March).

One-third of NSW coal mines exceed legislated dust levels

Industry and Investment NSW has released the results of a study into the levels of airborne dust found at the state's coal mines.

The investigation revealed that longwall mining operations in Newcastle and the Hunter District had the highest frequency of excessive dust levels.

The studies were designed to test the effectiveness of legislation introduced in December 2007, which required the levels of inhalable dust in coal mines to be limited to 10 mg per cubic metre.

“The results to date indicate that improved dust control measures will be required in the underground coal mines of NSW,” the Government said.

The investigators took a total of 303 samples from longwall operations across the state between February 2008 and September 2009.

Of those, 113 samples, or 37.3%, were in excess of the required limit.

The Newcastle and the Hunter Districts recorded very high non-conformance rates of 42.3% and 52.6% respectively, while 25.3% of the samples from the Southern District were above the limit.

The Western District was the only area to record perfect results, with none of its 29 samples above the limit.

The study also took 894 samples from other underground operations around the state, with 21.8% of those exceeding the limit.

Once again, the Newcastle (28.1%) and Hunter Districts (30.2%) were the worst offenders, with the Southern District (20.2%) not far behind.

By comparison, only 2.1% of 426 surface samples exceeded the level.

According to the Department, the main reasons for the inadequate ventilation, water and dust control, poor operator positioning, damaged equipment and poor work practices.

The Government recommends mines implement dust suppression equipment, like water sprays or isolation or capture technology and make sure they are regularly maintained.

Ventilation also needs to be applied in the correct quantities and at the right locations.
